Pace is how long it takes to cover one unit of distance. Speed is how much distance you cover in an hour. They describe the same effort two ways: runners tend to think in pace (5:00 per km), while treadmills and bikes read in speed (12 km/h), so being able to flip between them is genuinely useful.
Pace is time divided by distance; speed is distance divided by time. A 5:00 per km pace is 12 km/h (60 ÷ 5). To swap between kilometres and miles, one mile is 1.609 km, so multiply a min/km pace by 1.609 to get min/mile.
